Carbon steel sheet metal is among the most utilized steel metals today. This material boasts high malleability and versatility and is suited for a wide range of applications. It is available in a variety of carbon content levels, with hardness increasing as the amount of carbon content rises.

Common Uses for Carbon Steel Sheet Metal

Carbon steel sheet metal is frequently used for general fabrication, primarily when oxidation is not a problem or if the metal will be coated after fabrication to guard against the elements.

It can be used for various applications ranging from automotive parts to store signage, machine components to knives and cutting blades, and structural uses in building, dies, springs, punches, and the like.

It offers plenty of utility because it is inexpensive and usually has a higher tensile strength than copper and aluminum.

Grades and Finishes

Carbon steel sheet metal is available in various finishes and available in various grades of carbon steel. Carbon steel’s tensile and yield strength qualities can differ substantially among the various grades.

Low Carbon

Low carbon has a carbon content of 0.05% to 0.25%, making it more malleable. It is often used for fencing, gates, railings, and chain links because of its strength and affordability. Low carbon steel has a tensile strength of about 65,300 psi and yield strength of about 47,900 psi.

Medium Carbon

Medium carbon has a carbon content of between 0.29% and 0.54% and provides better mechanical qualities due to its increased manganese level. Automobiles, washing machines, refrigerators, structures, and bridges all make use of this material.

Cold-rolled

Cold-rolled is used in automotive panels, trailer siding, roofing, and fuel tanks. Among its many impressive features are its effortless formability and its flawlessly smooth surface.

Hot Rolled

Hot rolled is used in welding applications, construction trades and truck frames. Hot rolled steel is used in applications where tight tolerance are not required.

Galvanized

Galvanized steel sheets offer a better defense against corrosion and are easy to weld and drill. This material is widely used in automobile parts and items that are exposed to water, such as hoses, buckets, and irrigation pipes.
